All used cars are not created equal; What's the difference?

Misconception: All dealers get used cars from the same place

I read a post recently on facebook that prompted me to write this. The poster said all dealers get their cars from the same place, or the same auctions. This poster specifically mentioned a smaller auction place that only very small dealers would go to.

All used cars are not created equal; What's the difference?

Big dealers typically don't buy cars at smaller auctions at all, and they almost never buy older cars, or ones with higher miles at auction. 

Many of these smaller auctions are full of the cars nobody wants! 

Older cars at auctions, in general, are cars that dealers can't sell, ones that did not pass their inspection, or have too many problems to recondition.

Why? Because a big dealer would love to keep and sell every car they can.

The cars that the bigger dealers buy at auction are off lease or former rentals, with low miles, that have been well taken care of. In some cases, these cars are only available to dealers that cary that particular line. For example: A Chevy dealer has access to great off lease Chevy cars that other dealers can't get.

At a bigger dealer, especially one that sells new cars, the older cars are all local trades, not from auctions!

Why don't the big dealers buy cars at the small auctions, and why don't they buy older high mile cars at auction?

If a dealer gets an older car that's nice they'll keep it and sell it.

If the get a car that has some irreconcilable problems, it costs to much to recondition, smells bad, has a weird electrical problem or is just plain a bad car, it goes to auction.

The older cars at auction are the ones no one wants. The smaller auctions are full of leftovers, you don't want the leftovers.

Small dealers wind up with the leftovers

The auctions that the small dealers go to all full of all the cars that the big dealers did not want. I worked at a small dealer for a short time, the cars had weird front end problems electrical problems and more, that's why the big dealer that took it in on trade sent it to auction.

Local trades are the best!

The cars that the big dealers take in on trade, recondition and sell on their lot are the cream of the crop, the best cars that the dealer took in on trade and the most reliable car for you to buy.

Other things to consider when choosing a dealer to buy a car from

Some dealers have higher standards than others, and do a better job of reconditioning cars than others do. Some dealers stand behind the cars after they sell them better than others.

Many smaller dealers do recondition the cars much, or at all, because they find they have too many problems to fix, or they just don't want to invest much in them.

These are all other things you need to carefully look at and consider before choosing a dealer to buy a car from.
